Foreshore Precinct - Railway
The narrow gauge wheels (pictured below) came from Port Germein Railways rolling stock and were once used on the jetty to carry freight to and from ships berthed at its end.
In 1892 it was reported that 132 wagon-loads of wheat were passing through the Gorge into Port Germein daily.
This was the scene of great activity with many sailing ships calling into and loading wheat from this harbour. In its heyday Port Germein was the largest grain shipping port in Australia and last used for shipping in 1947/48.
